Free Car Repair Cost Estimator: What Body Shops Actually Charge

7 min readBy AM Collision & Towing

Quick answer: A typical bumper repair costs $400 to $1,500 depending on whether it's a paintless dent repair, panel respray, or full replacement. Door repair runs $1,500 to $3,500 on a mid-range vehicle. Full body damage with multiple panels runs $4,000 to $12,000. ADAS recalibration on 2018+ vehicles adds $200 to $600 to any front-end repair.

Almost every search for a car repair cost estimator free ends in disappointment, most results are blog posts that describe ranges in vague paragraphs, with no actual tool. This guide gives you both: real numbers from a working body shop, and a free tool that does the math by panel, vehicle class, and severity.

How body shops actually quote a repair

A real body-shop estimate has three line items: parts, labor, and paint & finish. The rough split for cosmetic damage is 55% parts / 40% labor / 5% paint. For panel-replacement work, the parts share grows. For dent-only (paintless dent repair, PDR) work, labor is almost everything.

When a quote loads 80%+ of the cost into labor without panel replacement, ask why. Common honest reasons: hidden frame damage discovered during teardown, sensor recalibration on modern cars, aluminum welding for premium vehicles. Less honest reasons exist too, and a second quote is the best protection.

Real cost ranges by panel

These are 2026 averages for moderate damage on a mid-range vehicle:

  • Bumper: $500–$1,500. PDR can drop it to $150–$400 if the paint is intact.
  • Door: $700–$2,000. A door replacement runs $1,500–$3,500 depending on year/model.
  • Windshield: $300–$1,500. ADAS-equipped windshields (cameras for lane-keeping) hit the high end after recalibration.
  • Hood: $800–$2,500. Aluminum hoods on premium vehicles can exceed $4,000 once paint is matched.
  • Fender: $550–$1,800. Often paired with bumper damage, bundled together saves on paint blending.
  • Full body: $4,000–$12,000. Above ~70% of the vehicle's ACV (actual cash value), insurers typically total it instead of repair.

Multiply economy by 0.7×, luxury by 1.7×. Severity (minor / moderate / severe) shifts the range by 30% in each direction.

Car bumper repair cost estimate

Bumper damage is the most common search and the most variable repair. A scuff that needs a respray on a 2019 Honda Civic typically runs $400–$700. A cracked bumper that needs full replacement on the same car runs $900–$1,300. On a luxury car like a BMW 3 Series, double those numbers.

For PDR-eligible damage (paint intact, no creasing), expect $150–$400. Many shops charge $50–$75 just to assess PDR eligibility, worth it if the damage is borderline.

Should you file insurance or pay out of pocket?

The math is simple, but not obvious.

  • Estimate < deductible + $300: Pay out of pocket. Filing for a small claim often raises your premium more over 3 years than the saving.
  • Estimate > 3× deductible: File the claim. Premium hits are real but eclipsed by the cash savings.
  • In between: Run the insurance claim readiness checker first, if your documentation is weak, you'll get lowballed and the math flips.

Pro tips before you walk into a shop

  • Get two estimates. Variance between licensed shops is typically 10–25%. A second number gives you negotiating room.
  • Ask about OEM vs aftermarket parts. OEM costs 20–60% more but plays nicely with sensor recalibration on modern cars.
  • Bring a damage report. Use our damage checklist generator so the shop can't “discover” new damage on your dime.
  • Ask about diminished value. If the other driver is at fault, you're entitled to compensation for the lost resale value of your repaired car. Most drivers leave this on the table.
