Towing pricing, explained without the surprises

Towing is one of those services where the gap between what you expect and what you pay can be 3–4×. The base hookup fee, the per-mile rate, the after-hours surcharge, and the storage fee (if the truck doesn't deliver same day) all stack. Most drivers find out at the side of the road, usually at 11pm in the rain.

This calculator gives you a realistic line-item estimate before you call dispatch. The base fee is consistent at roughly $50 nationally. The per-mile rate moves with vehicle weight: motorcycles around $3, sedans around $4, SUVs and trucks around $5 because they require more capable equipment. Nights and weekends add 20%.

When this estimator is most useful

  • Comparing tow companies. If a quote is meaningfully higher than the calculator's number, ask for an itemized breakdown. A reputable operator will give you base + per-mile + surcharges in writing.
  • Deciding if your insurance covers this. Roadside assistance riders typically cover the first $50–$100. If your estimated total is $90, you may pay nothing out of pocket. If it's $250, only a third is covered.
  • After an accident or breakdown. Pair this with the roadside emergency checklist so you stay safe while you wait, and the insurance claim readiness checker if there's damage to file for.

What we tell customers before they book a tow

  • Ask for a flatbed by default. They cost a small premium but eliminate the risk of drivetrain damage on your way to the shop. Required for AWD, 4WD, and most luxury cars anyway.
  • Confirm drop-off destination before hookup. Drivers can't change route mid-tow without re-pricing. Decide in advance: home, shop, or a friend's driveway.
  • Get the operator's name and truck number. If anything goes wrong, you have a paper trail. Reputable operators offer this without being asked.
  • If you're in a no-park zone or on a freeway, don't wait quietly, that's a 911 call, not a roadside one. Police clear lanes faster than tow operators do.

Frequently asked questions

How is towing cost calculated?
Most tow companies charge a base hookup fee (typically $50) plus a per-mile rate ($3–$5 depending on vehicle), with a 20% surcharge for nights and weekends.
Is towing covered by my insurance?
If your auto policy includes Roadside Assistance or Towing & Labor coverage, yes, typically up to $50–$100 per incident. Without that rider, towing is out-of-pocket. Some auto clubs (AAA, etc.) also include it.
Why is a flatbed more expensive than a wheel-lift tow?
Flatbeds are required for AWD/4WD vehicles, low-clearance cars, and any vehicle with drivetrain damage. They cost more because they tie up a larger truck and protect the vehicle from additional wear.
What if I need a long-distance tow over 100 miles?
Long-haul tows are usually negotiated as a flat rate. Call dispatch for a written quote, our calculator caps at 100 miles, which covers most local recoveries.
Do I need a flatbed or is a regular tow truck OK?
Flatbeds are required for AWD/4WD vehicles, low-clearance sports cars, vehicles with drivetrain damage, and most luxury cars. Regular wheel-lift tows are fine for everyday FWD/RWD cars with no drivetrain issues. If in doubt, ask for a flatbed, it's safer and the cost difference is small.
Why are weekend tows more expensive?
Operators pay overtime to dispatchers, drivers, and mechanics on weekends and holidays. The 20% surcharge isn't a markup, it covers labor cost. Same logic for after-hours: drivers earn night-shift differential.
How much to tow a car 10 miles?
For a sedan during business hours: $50 base + (10 mi × $4) = $90. For an SUV: $50 + $50 = $100. Add 20% on weekends or after hours, so a sedan tow at night is about $108. Our calculator handles this exactly, pick your vehicle, set the slider to 10, and choose the time of service.
What is the average towing cost per mile in 2026?
Roughly $3 per mile for motorcycles, $4 for sedans, $5 for SUVs and trucks. The base hookup fee runs about $50, and most companies add 20% for nights, weekends, and holidays. Anything substantially above these numbers warrants a second quote.
Is this a free towing estimate calculator with no signup?
Yes. No login, no email, no upsell. Set distance, vehicle type, and time of service, and you get a transparent line-item breakdown (base fee, per-mile, after-hours surcharge) in seconds. Built by a working 24/7 tow operation in Ronkonkoma, NY.
Can this calculator handle RV towing estimates?
Partially. RV towing is a different category that requires medium- or heavy-duty wreckers, not standard flatbeds. For a Class B (van conversion), the SUV/truck rate here is a reasonable starting point. For Class A or Class C motorhomes, expect $5 to $8 per mile plus a higher base fee ($150 to $300), depending on length and weight class. For accurate RV towing numbers, call our dispatch directly.
Where can I find a free RV towing estimate calculator?
Most generic towing calculators don't separate RV class properly. Our calculator covers cars, SUVs, and trucks (which works for Class B RV conversions). For Class A and Class C motorhomes, dispatch the call to a heavy-duty operator. We coordinate that for customers in our Long Island service area.
